Anthropic has signed a lease with the developer EverWind for data centre capacity at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, which a company executive described on Friday 16 October as its first data centre agreement in Canada.
EverWind separately unveiled plans to invest more than C$10 billion in a data centre campus and wind power projects in the province, an investment it presents as the largest privately funded in Nova Scotia's history.
Jacob Glick, Anthropic's head of public policy for Canada, said the company would protect ratepayers and water resources and make sure local communities benefit. Data centres have drawn criticism for heavy power and water use and for straining local infrastructure.
The lease arrives at a busy time for the company. It spent $7.33 billion on computing and infrastructure last year, three times the 2024 figure, and is preparing a US stock market listing. New York City Comptroller Mark Levine has urged a delay over safety and governance concerns. Nothing links that call to the Canadian deal.
Several basics are still unknown: the length and financial value of the lease, the facility's capacity, when construction will finish, whether Anthropic is the only tenant, what the ratepayer and water protections will involve, which services will run at the site, and which approvals are needed.
