Trump Puts New Russia Sanctions on Hold, Citing National Interest

The decision pauses a sweeping package targeting Russia’s economy, raising fresh questions about Washington’s strategy towards Moscow and its support for Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has suspended a new package of sanctions against Russia, just weeks after signing the legislation into law. The move delays measures intended to restrict Moscow’s ability to finance its war against Ukraine.

The package targeted Russian officials, banks and oil tankers used to transport Russian energy. It also authorised tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil and natural gas, subject to specified exemptions.

Trump told Congress the suspension was in the national interest, but the White House did not immediately provide a detailed explanation. The decision came shortly before the law’s implementation deadline and follows Trump’s announcement of a deal to purchase diesel from Russia.

The move has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that delaying sanctions could weaken pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. It also adds uncertainty to US policy towards the war in Ukraine, as Washington weighs economic pressure against energy costs and diplomatic engagement with Moscow.
