Two Killed When a Light Aircraft From Glasgow Comes Down Near Drymen

A 16-year-old and an 80-year-old died at the scene, and air accident investigators have begun an inquiry.

A 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man have died after a light aircraft that took off from Glasgow Airport came down north-east of Drymen, in the Stirling area. Police Scotland said emergency services were called to reports of a collision at around 4.45pm on Friday 16 October. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and their next of kin have been told.

The aircraft left Glasgow Airport shortly after 4.15pm and stopped transmitting about 20 minutes later. It has been described only as a light aircraft, and its type and what it collided with have not been given.

Temporary airspace restrictions, including for drones, are in place around the village and are likely to stay for some time while investigators work. Police have warned that flying in the restricted airspace is a criminal offence.

The air accident investigation branch has begun an inquiry and a team has travelled to the site to gather evidence. Glasgow Airport's managing director, Gavin Birch-Williams, described the event as deeply tragic and said the airport was aware of an incident involving an aircraft that had departed from it.
