Isak Wins It for Liverpool at Brentford After Two Red Cards and a Reversed Penalty

Szoboszlai and Frimpong both went off injured as Liverpool moved up to fifth and Brentford lost their first league game of the season.

Liverpool won 2-1 at Brentford on Saturday, with Alexander Isak scoring the winner after the home side had two players sent off. Liverpool moved above Brentford into fifth place, and it was Brentford's first league defeat of the season.

Brentford went ahead in the 44th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter headed in Igor Thiago's cross, moments after the referee, John Brooks, overturned a Liverpool penalty on review because Dango Ouattara had clearly touched the ball in his challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. In first-half stoppage time, in the 45+8th minute, Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off for violent conduct after headbutting Jeremy Jacquet before a Liverpool corner, a decision Brooks made at the pitch-side monitor.

Liverpool equalised in the 62nd minute through Victor Muñoz, who cut in to finish a pass from Florian Wirtz, and Isak scored in the 70th, finishing from Bradley Barcola's knockdown after a cross from Mac Allister. Vitaly Janelt was shown a second yellow card in the 90+2nd minute for tripping substitute Rio Ngumoha, leaving Brentford with nine men.

Liverpool's injury worries grew. Dominik Szoboszlai went off around the 32nd minute in his first start back and was replaced by Trey Nyoni, and manager Andoni Iraola said it was a recurrence of his hamstring problem. Jeremie Frimpong came off seven minutes after being introduced in the second half with a new injury. Both are expected to be out for some time.

Iraola said his team played well until they went 2-1 up against ten men, and were more disappointed afterwards because they then missed clear chances to settle the game. Brentford manager Keith Andrews said the sending-off changed the dynamics of the match and made it more of a challenge, and felt his side had been edging it before the red card.
