Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton on Saturday, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals after the interval at Hill Dickinson Stadium. He scored 43 seconds after the restart, in the 46th minute, and again in the 90th, following up a loose ball from a free-kick by Henderson. It was Chelsea's first Premier League clean sheet in nine months, their first win at Everton since August 2022 and Everton's first league defeat of the season.
The match was overshadowed by an injury to Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martínez. In the 66th minute he collided with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a cross and stayed down. After almost nine minutes of treatment he was stretchered off in the 74th minute with what looked like a serious head injury, and was taken to hospital for precautionary tests. His replacement, Penders, aged 21, became Chelsea's youngest goalkeeper in the Premier League.
A first-half incident also drew debate. In the 42nd minute Rogers, who had already been booked, challenged Everton's James Garner and appeared to catch his knee with his studs. He was not sent off and the video assistant referee upheld the decision. Former referee Mike Dean said he thought it deserved at least a yellow card but that his instinct was to call a red. Everton manager David Moyes questioned why Rogers escaped punishment.
Chelsea, on 13 points from seven games, moved above Everton and into the Champions League places for now. Their manager, Xabi Alonso, said he was very happy with the result and the performance, praised the team's maturity and said the clean sheet mattered, though he added that it was only one game.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2 with two goals from Erling Haaland, and Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle.
